Successfully completed workshop on saltworks management in protected areas: “Learning from the Best Regional practices to shape the Future of saltworks management in Ulcinj”

As part of the WBC-RRI.NET project, implemented by the Science and technology park of Montenegro and the NGO ZONa, we organized a workshop on saltworks management in protected areas, titled “Learning from the Best regional practices to shape the future of saltworks management in Ulcinj,” with the support of the Municipality of Ulcinj.

During the workshop, the development experiences of two successful saltworks from the region were presented.

Using the specific example of Sečovlje in Slovenia, mr. Iztok Škornik, a nature protection monitoring expert, discussed the developmental phase of the saltworks and its current operational model.

Ms. Nikolina Franušić Bajlo, a specialist in research, development, and tourism, presented the Pag Saltworks in Croatia, as well as the journey they have undergone to reach their current level of development.

Additionally, as part of the workshop, professor Danka Caković, a regular professor at the department of Biology at the University of Montenegro, spoke about the flora, habitats, and the perspective of environmental conservation in the context of the development of the Ulcinj saltworks. The workshop was part of the WBC-RRI.NET project, which focuses on the implementation of responsible research and innovation in the Western Balkans. The organizers were the Science and technology park of Montenegro (STP) and the non-governmental organization knowledge, education, science (ZONa), with the support of the Municipality of Ulcinj.

We believe that these activities and the experiences of saltworks from the region will be of great help in planning the future development of the Ulcinj saltworks.
