The StoreMore project in its final phase: The region united around sustainable energy storage

The StoreMore project is successfully entering its final phase of implementation. During the first half of 2026, a series of national workshops and policy discussions were organized across the Danube region within the framework of the project.

The primary objective of these events was to support the wider adoption of sustainable energy storage solutions, as well as to promote more efficient integration of renewable energy sources. In addition, the workshops served as a platform for strengthening professional dialogue between local authorities, the energy sector, research institutions, regulatory bodies, and market stakeholders.

Below we present an overview of the key topics and conclusions from the workshops held.

Hungary: Expert Dialogue on the Future of Energy Storage

In the authentic setting of the Wine Museum in Békéscsaba, a national workshop and expert roundtable were successfully held, bringing together nearly 50 energy experts. Representatives of local authorities, academia, energy organizations, and professional institutions initiated a discussion on key challenges, opportunities, and the future role of energy storage. The event enabled direct exchange of practical experiences and development proposals, with a special focus on the real-world application of these technologies in building more flexible and sustainable systems.

Romania: Innovative Digital Tools and Investments

During the online workshop in Romania, discussions were primarily focused on how energy storage solutions can be applied in practice. Participants analyzed the project’s results to date and were introduced to innovative tools for system simulation and modelling. The expert discussion emphasized the regulatory framework, grid digitalization, as well as the financial and technological viability of investments in this field.

Germany: System Integration and Policy Recommendations

Organized for the municipality of Fuchstal, this online expert meeting successfully brought together and connected all key stakeholders in the energy storage value chain. The focus of the discussion was on the integration of battery systems into the electricity grid. Key challenges such as grid barriers, regulatory uncertainty, and gaps in digitalization were thoroughly mapped, based on which concrete recommendations were formulated for policymakers in order to accelerate market development.

Czechia: Financing, Innovation and Artificial Intelligence

The Innovation Centre of the Ústí Region in Ústí nad Labem hosted the Czech workshop dedicated to energy storage, the use of green energy, and technological innovation. In addition to presenting the main objectives of the StoreMore project, participants were introduced to concrete funding opportunities through the European programmes Horizon Europe and the EIC Accelerator. Particular interest was generated by the project’s online modelling tool and the advanced artificial intelligence-based optimization solution.

Slovenia: Smart Energy Management

BSC Kranj and Elektro Gorenjska organized a workshop in Naklo dedicated to smart energy management today and in the future. Participants were introduced to the activities of the StoreMore project and two new digital tools for modelling and optimizing renewable energy sources. The technical part of the programme also featured several related technologies, as well as successful projects in this field.

Bosnia and Herzegovina: Guidelines for Low-Carbon Transition

The workshop in Sarajevo was organized with a focus on defining strategic guidelines that encourage energy storage. Representatives of the government sector, energy industry, market actors, and civil society jointly discussed modalities for transitioning towards low-carbon systems. The expert discussion highlighted the key role of energy storage in increasing grid flexibility and reliability, while also emphasizing the importance of a stable and predictable investment environment.

Montenegro: Development of Sustainable Energy Storage

The Science and Technology Park of Montenegro hosted a workshop titled “Development of Sustainable Energy Storage in Montenegro: Policies, Market, and Investments.” The event brought together representatives of state institutions, the energy sector, academia, and industry, who exchanged experiences and ideas through an open dialogue. The focus was on identifying barriers and opportunities for improving regulation, as well as encouraging concrete energy storage projects. The joint conclusion was that a successful energy transition in Montenegro requires coordinated cooperation among all technological and market stakeholders, along with continuous exchange of knowledge and international experience.

The national workshops marked an important milestone in the implementation of the StoreMore project. They made a key contribution to strengthening regional expert cooperation, raising awareness of sustainable energy storage technologies, and shaping practical recommendations that support a clean energy future for the Danube region.

As the culmination of all these activities, the final meeting and concluding StoreMore event will be held from 8 to 10 June 2026 at the University of Pannonia in Veszprém, Hungary. During this three-day gathering, the consortium and stakeholders will analyse the achieved results and lessons learned. A particular focus will be placed on the technical evaluation following the completion of project activities, as well as on exploring opportunities for the further practical application of the developed solutions.

The StoreMore project is co-financed by the European Union under the Interreg Danube Region Programme.
