VicIT is a MedTech startup focused on developing innovative deep-tech solutions in the field of neuro-monitoring. The company is developing SmartICPMonitor, a system designed for people living with hydrocephalus, with the aim of enabling patients to measure and monitor intracranial pressure (ICP) in real time in their everyday lives. SmartICPMonitor addresses an important gap in the existing approach to hydrocephalus monitoring.
Direct measurement of ICP is currently primarily available in specialized hospital settings and, when standard invasive ICP monitoring is used, requires the placement of an intracranial catheter or sensor, making it unsuitable for routine monitoring of patients in everyday life. Between clinical appointments, patients, parents, and physicians therefore generally lack immediate access to objective information on how ICP is changing.
This information gap becomes particularly evident when a person living with hydrocephalus develops symptoms such as headache, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, or changes in their general condition. Such symptoms are not specific to shunt malfunction and may also occur in other conditions, including viral infections or influenza. Therefore, based on symptoms alone, a patient or parent cannot reliably determine whether they are experiencing a temporary health issue or a change that requires an assessment of shunt system function.
SmartICPMonitor is designed to address this gap by enabling patients to initiate ICP measurements and obtain real-time information about intracranial pressure. The value of SmartICPMonitor lies in providing patients and physicians with access to objective ICP information that is currently largely unavailable between individual clinical assessments.
